On multiple occasions, parents have been trying to mandate recess for FL schools. The recess time has been removed due to failing academic tests and has been replaced with test-prep. Mind you, these are elementary school students. Recess is a time for "brain breaks", relationship building, and social skills. Personally, I disagree with what the state has done. There are better methods to failing test scores such as, better teaching during academic time or incorporating study hall time. What are your thoughts on this issue?
I think that recess is important. It allows students to get away from the classroom and expel energy that if bottled up may cause classroom disruptions. I believe that often time adults forget what it's like to be kids and how short their attention spans are. I agree with you that they need a break and and opportunity to build those social skills and make classrooms funky(ier) in the spring.

ReplyDeleteI agree that we need recess in school. So much of the "work" of children is done through play.Playing outdoors or even indoors in free will play sparks creativity that can't be created in the classroom. Recess is a time when kids improvise their play... Unfortunately, this doesn't happen very often in the day of a child in 2016.

ReplyDeleteMy field placement is in an elementary school, and I cannot begin to express how strongly I disagree with the decision of the Florida Senate! As you stated, kids need to get a chance to move around and burn off some of their energy to refocus on learning. Sitting at a desk all day is not good for their mind or their bodies physically. Exercise and play are important for development, and allow children to apply important social skills that they are learning in school. I am a former student athlete, which has allowed me to experience this crucial growth first hand. At recess, youth are learning skills that are, in my opinion, far more important in the long run than most of the academic coursework they are exposed to.
ReplyDeleteRecess is critical for youth. There are so many benefits to youth having recess, and it is disheartening to see that recess is not required. I know that it can be difficult for many adults, including myself, to sit in a desk for 7-8 hours a day, so how can we expect children to do so without getting tired, disruptive, angry, etc? Children need to have breaks, time to socialize, and release energy.
ReplyDeleteI very strongly believe that recess time is critical for students and should not be taken away for test preparation. If teachers feel like they are required to teach so much material that they can't provide students with a 20 minute recess period, then I think there may be an issue of greater concern there. Children are not at a developmental stage where they can sit in a desk all day long and continue to learn. This kind of thing is really frustrating to me!
ReplyDeleteI also believe that recess is critical to students and their learning. I, as an adult, have difficulty learning all day with no breaks or time to get up and move around. Much less elementary students, who need to be active, which in turn helps with focus and attentiveness. Not all students have safe and open areas at home to be able to play outside and get their energy out either. Hopefully removing recess will expose the greater problem which is the delivery of/structure of education, and allow recess to be re-incorporated into these elementary students school day
ReplyDeleteI see this oh too often. Many teachers will take recess away from students because of bad behavior. What they don't think about is students need to get that energy out of their body. After lunch students tend to act out more because they have energy from the food they ate and having their recess taken away. Now when they get back to class thth ey act out even more because they didn't release that energy during that break.
